Seventy-five years ago, Wheaton College established the HoneyRock Center for Leadership Development in the Northwoods of Wisconsin as a place for leadership development and outdoor education. Since its founding in February 1951, HoneyRock has grown from sparse camping grounds into a robust 1,000-acre campus with an education center, dining hall, health center, chapel, and dozens of cabins. It’s programs, too, have expanded over the decades, now serving everyone from elementary students to Wheaton faculty. In honor of HoneyRock’s 75th anniversary, below Wheaton Archives & Special Collections highlights selected materials from College Archives’ HoneyRock collections that offer a glimpse into the center’s rich and varied history.

In the Heart of the North Woods
This month hundreds of new Wheaton College students will visit HoneyRock Center for Leadership Development in the northern woods of Wisconsin to begin their Wheaton journey. Envisioned as “a laboratory in counseling and leadership for students,” time at HoneyRock has become a touchstone for many students’ experiences at Wheaton, as well as for Wheaton College faculty, staff, and families.
